Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Tax Cooperation between Malaysian Tax Academy (MTA) and South Centre, 4 May 2023
On 4 May 2023, the Malaysian Tax Academy (MTA) and South Centre formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Tax Cooperation in Geneva, Switzerland. The MOU was signed between Datuk Dr Mohd Nizom Sairi, Chief of Executive Officer of Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) and Dr. Carlos Correa, Executive Director of the South Centre, witnessed by Ms Rina Hanis Rodzli, Charge d’ Affaires, Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva.
2. The MTA is a training arm of IRBM. Through this MOU, the MTA and South Centre will collaborate on four areas, namely training and capacity building workshops on international taxation for tax official of Malaysia and other developing countries; capacity building of Malaysian international tax negotiators; policy advisory to IRBM on international tax topics; and sharing of relevant research.
3. In May 2022, the South Centre, MTA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia successfully co-organised the Virtual Digital Taxation Capacity Building Programme. The programme was a catalyst to the formation of an institutionalised collaboration between the MTA and South Centre.
4. The collaboration between the MTA and South Centre is consistent with the spirit of South-South Cooperation, which has been an integral component of Malaysia’s foreign policy. It is hoped that this partnership modality will pave the way for future South-South and Triangular Cooperation among countries of the Global South.
