STATEMENT BY
HIS EXCELLENCY AHMAD FAISAL MUHAMAD
PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS
AT GENEVA
AT THE HIGH-LEVEL PLEDGING EVENT FOR
THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN YEMEN
16 MARCH 2022
On behalf of the Government of Malaysia, I would like to thank the organisers for convening this pledging event. Amidst the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, this event is important to remind us of Yemen, which remains the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
2. Malaysia continues to be deeply concerned with the dire situation of the Yemeni people. According to UNICEF, seventy percent of Yemen’s population are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, with millions at risk of famine and children suffering from acute malnutrition. The Covid-19 pandemic and shortfall in humanitarian aid funding have only further complicated the situation.
3. It is therefore crucial to find a sustainable political solution in order to bring an end to the sufferings of the Yemeni people that has been going on for far too long. To this end, Malaysia reiterates its call for all parties to engage in UN-facilitated consultations, in good faith and without pre-conditions.
4. We fully support the role and presence of UN agencies and other humanitarian organisations to ensure that vital humanitarian assistance reaches the intended destinations. We also call for parties to the conflict to allow and facilitate unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief for civilians.
5. In closing, I am pleased to announce that the Government of Malaysia will maintain its annual contribution of USD 100,000 to the humanitarian appeal for Yemen.
Thank you.
