STATEMENT BY MALAYSIA
Review of Chile
18th Session of the UPR Working Group of the
Human Rights Council

Mr. President,
Malaysia warmly welcomes the delegation of Chile, led by His Excellency Minister Bruno Baranda to the 18th Session of the UPR Working Group of the Human Rights Council. We thank His Excellency for the presentation of Chile’s national report.
2. Malaysia commends Chile’s tremendous efforts in promoting and protecting the human rights of its people. Chile’s ratification to the nine core human rights treaties is testament for that. We are pleased that the Chilean government has undertaken serious efforts in strengthening its institutional and legislative framework. We also commend Chile for establishing its NHRI in 2009, which has been accredited “A” status in 2012. We also note the impressive progress Chile has made in improving the rights of women, including indigenous women, children and persons with disabilities, among others.
3. In 2009, Malaysia made recommendations to the Chilean government to look into the issue of trafficking in persons in Chile. We are pleased to note that significant progress has been made since then, particularly with the entering into force its human trafficking legislation in 2011 and the many initiatives that the Government has undertaken to address this issue.
4. To further promote and protect the human rights of its people, Malaysia wishes to make the following two recommendations:
4.1. One: To continue supporting the efforts made by the SERNAM in advancing women’s rights, including by providing the necessary budget allocation as well as human resources; and
