STATEMENT BY MALAYSIA
Review of Eritrea
18th Session of the UPR Working Group of the
Human Rights Council

Mr. President,
Malaysia welcomes the delegation of Eritrea to the 18th Session of the UPR Working Group of the Human Rights Council. We thank them for their presentation of the national report.
2. Malaysia appreciates the update by Eritrea in the promotion and protection of human rights in the country since its first UPR and commends the Government on the progress that it has made since then.
3. We note positively the on-going efforts by Eritrea in improving the rights of women and children, particularly in the areas of education where female students are given the opportunity to advance and empower themselves. We also note the emphasis given by the Government to further encourage and promote women’s participation in social and public life. With a view to further improving the rights of women in the country, Malaysia recommends that Eritrea provide adequate resources to implement awareness-raising activities on the role of women and to strengthen the existing structures for the advancement of women in the country.
4. Malaysia notes that more efforts are needed by Eritrea to meet the Millennium Development Goal 1 of eradicating extreme hunger and poverty. Malaysia therefore would like to recommend the Eritrean Government to redouble its efforts in addressing this issue. Despite the many challenges and constraints faced by the Government to fully provide the basic fundamental rights of its people, my delegation is confident that the Government would do its utmost to address those challenges and constraints, and wish them all the best in their efforts.
