TWO MALAYSIAN AGENCIES WIN AWARDS AT THE WSIS PRIZES 2023
During the Award Ceremony of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes, which was held in conjunction with the WSIS Forum 2023 in Geneva on 14 March 2023, two (2) Malaysian agencies, namely the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) received recognition from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for their excellence in leveraging ICTs to advance the implementation of WSIS outcomes and WSIS Action Lines as well as to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
MCMC through its project “Jalinan Digital Negara Plan” was crowned as the WSIS Project Winner for “Information and communication infrastructure: an essential foundation for an inclusive information society (Category 2)”. MCMC emerged as the winner against four (4) other finalists from China, Cuba, Jordan and Qatar.
Meanwhile, JKR through its project “Intelligent Project Supervision and Monitoring System 2.0” was announced as one of the five Champion Projects for ICT applications: benefits in all aspects of life — E-science (Category 14). The four (4) other Champion Projects are from China, Maldives, Netherlands, and Oman.
There are 18 categories contested, 900 projects submitted and 1.5 million votes cast in the WSIS Prizes 2023. Of the 900 submitted projects, 20 projects have been shortlisted as ‘Nominated Projects’ under each category. Five (5) of the 20 Nominated Projects were announced as Champion Projects while a Winning Project was selected amongst the five Champion Projects for each category.
Malaysian ministries, agencies and universities have been actively participating in this contest for many years. In recent years, Malaysia received similar recognition from the ITU through CyberSecurity Malaysia’s project “Global Accredited Cybersecurity Education Scheme: Centre of Excellence for Capacity Building and Lifelong Learning” under Category 5 (Building confidence and security in use of ICTs) in 2021.
Malaysia’s active participation and achievement in this contest and the WSIS in general, demonstrate Malaysia’s continued commitment and support to the Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals of the ITU. They also resonate with Malaysia’s pledge as a Council Member to work with all Member States, the ITU Secretariat and all relevant stakeholders in ensuring connectivity for all towards realising all 17 SDGs.
