A Semester of English in Malaysia
Under the English-Open-Door programme, Chile at the initiative of the Embassy has for the first time agreed to send ten undergraduate students for a semester of English in Malaysian Universities. The five students will be studying at Universiti Malaya and the other five at Universiti Sains Malaysia. Nine out of the ten students are girls. Eight out of the ten students were from the Universidad de Playa Ancha where HE Ambassador Faiz had given a talk on educational opportunities in Malaysia a few months earlier. They will later visit Universiti Malaysia Sabah for two weeks at the end of their course. They will be in Malaysia from January to May 2009.Upon graduation, they will become English teachers.
Apart from the Philippines, Malaysia is the only country in Asia selected by the Chilean Ministry of Education. The students will not only learn english but will have the opportunity to get to know the country and the people as well.
HE Ambassador Abdullah Faiz Zain hosted a farewell-cum-orientation programme followed by Hi-Tea at the Residence. Also invited were the proud parents of the students and officials from theChilean Ministry of Education and the Universidad de Playa Ancha.
At the orientation programme, the students were given a briefing on the history, the people, economy, political system, and constitutional monarchy of the country. The students were also briefed on the do's and don'ts in Malaysia.
Carlos Campusano and Carolina Melendez, two ex-MTCP participants were invited to give a talk and share their experiences in Malaysia with the students.
According to HE Ambassador Abdullah Faiz Zain, the programme which is not only historical as it is the first but a new beginning of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education. He hopes the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education will accept more students next year. He said that the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia should also be lauded for agreeing to the programme. This will also be an opportunity to promote Malaysia as the Centre of Educational Excellence.
