Ahmad Husni To Lead Trade Mission To Latin America
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- International Trade and Industry deputy minister Datuk Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah will lead the trade and investment mission to Argentina, Chile and Mexico from Aug 6-16.
Among others, the mission is aimed at promoting the export of products and services from Malaysia as well as strengthening business networking with business communities in the three countries.
Ahmad Husni is expected to address business communities in Buenos Aires (Aug 7), Santiago (Aug 10) and Mexico City (Aug 14) at seminars to be held, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) said in a statement Friday.
The mission will include senior officers from the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA).
Malaysia's total trade with Latin America in 2005 was valued at RM12.9 billion, an increase of 23 percent from the previous year.
Argentina is Malaysia's third largest trading partner in Latin America, with 20.9 percent share of the total trade with the region.
Argentina is also Malaysia's third largest export destination.
Malaysia's total trade with Argentina in 2005 amounted to RM2.7 billion. Exports recorded an increase of 54 percent to RM389.1 million while imports increased by 62.4 percent to RM2.3 billion.
Malaysia's major exports to Argentina are electrical and electronics products, rubber products, textiles and clothing, crude rubber and machinery, appliances and parts.
Major imports from Argentina are cereals, vegetable/animal fats and oil, iron and steel products, processed food and machinery appliances and parts.
MITI said Chile is Malaysia's fifth largest trading partner within the Latin American region.
In 2005, bilateral trade between both countries stood at RM893.4 million. Malaysian exports to Chile were valued at RM329.1 million while imports at RM564.3 million.
Major exports to Chile were electrical and electronic products, iron and steel products, rubber products, wood products and chemicals and chemical products.
Major imports from Chile were manufactures of metal, metalliferous ores and metal scrap, transport equipment and paper and pulp products.
In 2005, Mexico was Malaysia's second largest trading partner in the region and total bilateral trade between both countries was RM3.1 billion.
Of this, exports were valued at RM2.5 billion while imports accounted for RM513.8 million.
Major exports consisted of electrical and electronic products, transport equipment, textiles and clothing, wood products and chemicals and chemical products.
Major imports from Mexico were electrical and electronics products, iron and steel products, chemicals and chemical products, manufactures of metal and fresh, chilled and frozen seafood.
MITI also said that the mission would also seek to promote the export of latex gloves, telecommunication products, wooden products, electric and electronic products, construction services, services related to information communication and technology (ICT), engineering services and environmental services.
