14 December 2020 Chile will be lucky to witness a new total solar eclipse. This time, the spectacular phenomenon will occur in the south of the country, specifically in the Araucanía Region. From 11:30 a.m. the moon will begin to interpose itself over the sun, until reaching the moment of totality at around 1 p.m.
Tips and Precautions for Observing a Total Solar Eclipse
- Never look at the Sun without having your eyes protected.
- Never look at the Sun with binoculars or a telescope unless they have a special solar filter.
- If you want to look up at the Sun during the eclipse, then you need specialized lenses that meet international standards for light filters.
- Don't use X-rays as a filter.
- Don't use sunglasses as a filter.
- Do not use dark glass crystals as a filter.
- The only time you can observe the Sun with the naked eye is while the Moon completely covers the Sun. You should reuse the glasses immediately after the Sun rises again.
