First Universidad de Playa Ancha (UPLA) San Felipe Seminar on 'Globalization and English Teaching in the Aconcagua Valley'

The Embassy participated in the First UPLA San Felipe Seminar on 'Globalization and English Teaching in the Aconcagua Valley' held from 13 - 15 October 2008.  The Seminar was held to commemorate the 5th year training of English teachers-to-be in the San Felipe region.

H.E. Amb Abdullah Faiz Zain again presented a powerpoint presentation on 'Celebrating 51 Years of Nationhood' followed by Ms. Anil Adenan, Second Secretary, on 'Why Study in Malaysia'.  There were also several other speakers from University of Hawaii, California State University, University of Illinois, University of Minnesota and UPLA.

The Seminar was organised by Ms. Paula Figueroa Mori, one of our MTCP alumna.  She is an English professor at UPLA and attended the 'Developing Classroom Skills: The Effective Facilitator' at International Languages Teachers Training Institute (IPBA) from 31 March - 18 April 2008. UPLA celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.  Its main campus is located in Valparaiso, about 120 km northwest of capital city Santiago.  In its early years of its establishment in 1948, UPLA's main focus was to enhance the study of language in Chile.  From the humble beginning of three language department, i.e. Spanish, French and English, the University has added other major schools/areas including the first Chilean School for Journalism, Musical Arts and Pre-school Education.  It now has more than 5000 students in both of its campuses.
