Four Professors and an Ambassador

H.E. Amb. Abdullah Faiz Zain hosted dinner for Y.Bhg. Prof. Dr. Mohd Mustamam Abd. Karim, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Madya Dr. N.S. Rajendran, Director of  Aminuddin Baki Centre for Global Studies, Prof. Madya Dr. Noor Shah Saad, Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies & Research  and Dr. Sazelli Abd. Ghani, Senior Lecturer from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) at the Residence on Tuesday, 21 July 2009.

The delegation from UPSI was in Santiago to attend a meeting on the Teacher Education Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M Study) conducted by the International Association for Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and Michigan State University (MSU).

TEDS-M 2008 is a comparative study of teacher education with a focus on the preparation of teachers of mathematics at the primary and lower secondary levels. TEDS-M will pay particular attention to the links between teacher education policies, practices and outcomes. The study will provide participating countries with a valuable opportunity to conduct research on their own teacher education system and to learn from approaches used in other countries.

Teacher education has become an area of considerable interest among policy makers in many countries over recent years. This reflects a growing body of research on the central importance of teacher knowledge and skill to quality learning opportunities for students. It also reflects the need to recruit and prepare a new generation of teachers as large numbers of current teachers reach retirement age.
Countries participating in the study included Botswana, Canada, Switzerland, Chile, Germany, Spain, Georgia, Norway, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, United States and Malaysia.

H.E. Amb. Abdullah Faiz also had the opportunity to discuss possibility of UPSI conducting English courses for Chilean lecturers under the ?English Open Doors Programme? organized by the Chilean Ministry of Education. This year for the first time, 9 students attended a semester of English at Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia in collaboration between Chilean Ministry of Education and Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi Malaysia.
