Air Services Agreement Meeting
between
Malaysia and Chile
Santiago, Chile

After 17 years, Malaysia and Chile held a meeting to review the Air Services Agreement signed in Kuala Lumpur on 12 November 1992.
The Malaysian delegation was led by YBhg Dato Zakari Bahari, Secretary General of Ministry of Transport of Malaysia. Others in the Malaysian delegation included HE Abdullah Faiz Zain, Ambassador of Malaysia to Chile and Puan Rosida Ismail of MOT.
The Chilean delegation was led by HE Mr Guillermo Novoa, Secretary General of the Chilean Aeronautical Council (JAC). Others members included Mr Alvaro Lisboa, Legal Adviser of JAC, Mrs Daniela Montanola, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Christian Rodriquea, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Raquel Galarza, LAN Airlines and Mrs Patricio Reyes, LAN Airlines.
To rephrase the tagline made famous by Malaysia Airlines in describing its services, the meeting went Beyond Expectations as the Chilean Authorities offered up to 9th Freedom (Totally Open Sky). Malaysia for the moment only took up to the 6th Freedom and will consider the option up to 9th Freedom later.
MAS does not fly to Chile for the moment and neither LAN. Curently, MAS flies twice a week to Latin America to Buenos Aires through Cape Town and Johannesburg, both in South Africa. There is possibility of Air Asia X flying direct to Chile from Kuala Lumpur through the Pacific in a near future. The launch of a direct air services is expected to create the opportunities in the areas of tourism, trade and investment between the two countries
In view of the dynamic aviation market especially between the Asian and South American region, the successful conclusion of the ASA will pave the way to further expand the aviation cooperation between the two countries.
The Meeting came on the heel of the successful State Visit of Their Majesties the Yang di Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong to Chile last April.
