International Educational Fair, Universidad de Chile, Santiago

The Embassy of Malaysia in Santiago participated in the International Educational Fair on 8 and 9 August 2008 at the Universidad de Chile, Santiago.

The International Education Fair is the first annual educational fair organized by University of Chile, a renowned and top public university in Chile. The University of Chile celebrated its 165 years anniversary this year. The objective of the Fair was to encourage Chilean students to study abroad, to expose them to countries of different cultures, education system as well as to learn foreign language especially English.

The Fair housed 25 booths, including representatives from travel agents, English language centers, financial institutions, education organizations, and embassies. The Embassy of Malaysia in Santiago was the only Asian embassy represented at the Fair.

Approximately more than 2000 students from different universities in Santiago attended the Fair. The booth of the Embassy was swarmed with curious and interested parents and students on both days.

H.E. Ambassador Abdullah Faiz Zain also give a half an hour power-point presentation on 'Why Study in Malaysia'. Ms. Jaqueline Quezada, former MTCP participant and student of Universidad de Chile also assisted in the presentation. Apart from the presentation, H.E. Ambassador Abdullah Faiz Zain was also interviewed by a local television station.

The Fair was indeed a successful event in promoting Malaysia's educational system in Chile. Many attendees ranging from high-school to post-graduate university students were interested with the high quality of education and the low cost of living and studies that Malaysia offers to international students. Many were interested to study English in Malaysia.

One of the many interesting questions posed was whether students were required to wear 'purdah' - a misconception that the Embassy quickly dispelled.

Malaysian education system in particular its higher education institutions, in this regard, could be further explored as an area of cooperation between Malaysia and Chile. The Embassy of Malaysia also took the opportunity to promote tourism in Malaysia.
