Lunch hosted in Honour of Chilean Foreign Minister
H.E. Ambassador Maria Consuelo Puyat-Reyes, Dean and Ambassador of the Philippine hosted a Luncheon in honour of H.E. Mariano Fernandez Amunategui, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile at her Residence on 7th May 2009. She hosted the lunch on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Ambassadors comprising Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. The lunch was 'pot-luck'. Malaysia prepared chicken curry for the Luncheon.
Ambassador Fernandez. Mariano was formerly Chilean Ambassador to United States before being appointed as Foreign Minister on 13 March 2009. He was a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 until 2000 before being posted as Ambassador to Spain..
He had the distinction of receiving His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Marhum Tuanku Ja'afar Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman and His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah for State Visits in 1995 and 2009 respectively.
HE Mariano Fernandez, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile is a law graduate from Catholic University of Chile and a political sociology graduate from the University of Bonn, Germany.
HE Fernandez joined the Foreign Service in 1967 and during his professional career he served in the Embassy of Chile to Germany (1971 ? 1974). Between 1974 and 1982 he resided in the city of Bonn, where he was journalism editor of German magazines and news agencies. Upon returning to Chile, he served as researcher and member of the Executive Committee of the Studies Center for Development (1982 - 1990).
HE Mariano Fernandez Amunategui was Ambassador of Chile before the European Community (1990 - 1992); Ambassador of Chile to Italy (1992-1994); Ambassador of Chile to Spain (2000-2002); Ambassador of Chile to the United Kingdom (2002-2006), and is currently serving as Ambassador of Chile to the United States.
During the administration of the former President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, he served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile (1994-2000).
Ambassador Fernandez also worked as member of the Editorial Committee in the magazines 'Mensaje' and 'Apsi', in the newspaper 'Fortin Mapocho' and in the 'Cooperativa' radio station.
In the academic field, he has been President and Vice President of the Institute for European and Latin American Relations (IRELA) in Madrid, Spain; Vice President of the Italian-Latin American Institute (IILA) in Rome, Italy: He also served as member of the Executive Committee of the Jacques Maritain Institute in Rome and as Chairman of the International Council of the Latin American Center for Relations with Europe (CELARE) in Santiago, Chile.
Ambassador Mariano Fernandez has been granted awards by the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Spain, Sweden and the Holy See.
