The Malayan Tiger, or its scientific name Panthera Tigris Jacksoni, is asubspecies unique to the Malay Peninsula. Globally, there are nine subspecies of tigers, three of which are extinct.
Malayan Tigers are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) as a Totally Protected Species.
The 1st National Tiger Survey observation conducted in nearly 75% survey plots of tiger habitat in 2016 to 2018 found that the number of Malayan tigers were recorded to be less than 200. The trend shows that the population of Malayan Tigers is at a worrying state.
If no drastic measures are taken to address the decline of the Malayan Tiger population, Malaysia will most likely lose the species to extinction in five to ten years.
