A fragrant rice prepared with coconut milk and "pandan" leaf commonly considered as national dish in Malaysia. It is also one of the most famous for Malay breakfast. However, because of its versatility, nasi lemak is being able to be served in a variety of manners, it is now served and eaten any time of the day. Some says that sambal (hot spicy sauce) is the most important part of a nasi lemak which should be prepared properly. Besides sambal, traditionally nasi lemak is served with various side dishes, including fresh cucumber slices, small fried anchovies, roasted peanuts, hard boiled egg. For more substantial protein, nasi lemak may also be served with fried chicken, sambal sotong (cuttlefish in chili), cockles, and on special occasions; rendang daging. Nasi lemak is best to be wrapped or served on a banana leaves to enhance the flavour.There are Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Indian versions of nasi lemak.
