Visit to Concepcion, the second largest City after Santiago
H.E. Ambassador Abdullah Faiz Zain, accompanied by his wife and Ms. Anil Adenan, Second Secretary of the Embassy, made a visit to Concepción from 23 to 25 June 2008. Concepción, the second largest city in Chile with a population of about 2 million people, is located about 500 km south of Santiago.
2. Amb. Faiz paid a courtesy call on both the Governor of Bio Bio Region (Region VIII) and the Mayor of Concepción. H.E. Ambassador had a fruitful and constructive discussion with both the Governor and the Mayor. They were impressed with the state of development of Malaysia and hope that the bilateral and trade relations could be further strengthened. H.E. Ambassador Faiz also encouraged the Governor and Mayor to lead a trade delegation to visit Malaysia.
3. While in Concepcion, H.E. Ambassador Faiz also took the opportunity to visit four universities and have a meeting with Mr. Roger Sepúlveda Carrasco, Rector, University of Santo Thomas, Dr. Juan Miguel Cancino Cancino, Rector, Catholic University of Concepción, Mr. Sergio Lavanchy Merino, Rector, University of Concepción; and Mr. Federico Valdes Lafontaine, Vice Rector, University of Desarrollo (Development).
4. As part of the visit, Amb Faiz addressed students of University of Santo Thomas and University of Desarrollo (Development) Chile at their respective universities. The topic was 'Malaysia: Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood'.
5. During his talk, Ambassador Faiz gave an overview picture of Malaysia, its history, culture, people and highlights of economic development which had taken place since Malaysia gained its independence in 1957. Amb Faiz also gave a briefing on the state of bilateral relations. A short Tourism Malaysia DVD shown after the talk.
6. At the University of Concepción, Ambassador Faiz also gave a brief interview to the local television channel and newsletter of the university. The Embassy also took the opportunity to promote Malaysia by distributing brochures by Tourism Malaysia.
7. The courtesy calls on the Governor and Mayor of Concepción provided an excellent opportunity for both high officials to further strengthen the existing relations as well as to explore areas of cooperation. The meeting with the Rectors of the four major universities in Concepcion have been positive and encouraging. These visits to the Universities will pave for stronger cooperation in the field of education with Universities in Malaysia in such areas as student exchange, and joint cooperation in research. The Universidad de Desarollo also plan to make a study visit to Malaysia next year.
