There were over 500 international election observers including from Malaysia during the General Election of Algeria held on 10 May 2012. Malaysia’s participation was part of the OIC team. Other groups that sent their observers here include the EU, Africa Union, Arab League, UN and NGOs from US. During the meeting with the Government official from Algeria including the Foreign Minister of Algeria, H.E Mourad Medelci, the Algerian Government expressed its deep gratitude to Malaysia of its active interest to participate.
This election was of great importance to Algeria and being watched closely by the international committee following the rise of Arab Spring which first began in Tunisia, January 2011. The Malaysian team was represented by two (2) senior members of the Malaysian Election Commission and lends credence that Malaysia’s electoral system is highly regarded by the international community. The Ambassador of Malaysia to Algeria, H.E. Dr Hasrul Sani Mujtabar, hosted a dinner to welcome the Malaysian delegation to Algeria on 9 May 2012.
