Helsinki, 13 September 2016 - The Malaysian community in Helsinki celebrated the two Malaysian national celebrations: the 59th Merdeka Day and 53rd Malaysia Day on Tuesday 13 September 2016 at a High Tea reception at the Embassy of Malaysia in Helsinki. The event was hosted by HE Dato’ Blanche Olbery, Ambassador of Malaysia to Finland.
The event included singing the national anthem, “Negaraku" and "Jalur Gemilang", traditional waving of flags as well as a cake cutting ceremony. Participants enjoyed a range of Malaysian dishes. In her speech the Ambassador of Malaysia gave an update on the recent developments in bilateral relations between Finland and Malaysia such as proposed government-led cooperation with the respective ministries of health of the two countries and a number of activities that the Embassy has organised and will be organising before the end of the year.
The Malaysian Independence Day is on the 31 August, marking the day when the Federation of Malaya achieved its independence from the British Empire and was officially declared in 1957. Malaysia Day is an annual celebration held on 16 September to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian Federation in 1963 and the joining together of Malaya, North Borneo, and Sarawak to form Malaysia.
