Finland awarded the 4th International Gender Equality Prize (IGEP 2023) to Kabul-based Afghan Women Skills Development Centre (AWSDC). The NGO in Afghanistan provides shelters for women and works to promote & protect women's rights. Previous recipients included the We Will Stop Femicide (2021) - which works to combat violence against women in Turkey, and Equality Now (2019) - an NGO that seeks to challenge discriminatory laws and practices in different countries.
The goal of the International Gender Equality Prize is to promote gender equality worldwide and to encourage discussion on gender equality. Malaysia's participation at IGEP 2023 offered an excellent opportunity to network with relevant key persons such as government policy makers and ministers, the leadership of the City of Tampere, Finland’s presidential candidates and national and international leaders from gender equality organisations. There was also a substantial and broad representation of international media present.
