Independence Day and Eidul-Fitr are two important celebrations in our calendar of events in Malaysia every year, and is celebrated with merriment.
Independence Day or known in our national language as “Hari Merdeka” in Malaysia is observed on 31 August annually is very meaningful, as it marks the day when the nation attained its independence from Britain in 1957. Eidul-Fitr or “Hari Raya Aidilfitri” is a joyous occasion for Muslims as it marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Both occasions radiate happiness and unity among Malaysians of all races.
Malaysia draws its strength as a nation from its ability to celebrate the differences among its people, while simultaneously valuing its oneness. It has been the recipe for the tremendous strides we have made since independence. Festivals like Hari Raya Aidilfitri provide the opportunity for Malaysians of all races and walks of life to get together and celebrate harmoniously. Perhaps, this is what makes Malaysia unique, as traditions have long been preserved as a symbol of pride for all Malaysians.
In line with the National Day message addressed by the Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysians were once again reminded of the importance of unity. As emphasised by the Prime Minister, unity is the cornerstone in our society, and Malaysians should continue to manage the success of being a harmonious multi-racial and multi-religious country, build upon by our founding fathers.
In this context, the Malaysian Embassy in Helsinki had organised both celebrations under the theme of “Merdeka-Raya” on 18 September 2010 at the official residence of the Ambassador of Malaysia or “Rumah Malaysia”. The event which started off at 1 pm and ended at 4 pm, was attended by approximately more than hundred Malaysians and friends of Malaysia together with their families. Different types of cuisine were served, including traditional delicacies which are normally served during Eidul-Fitr.
The Embassy hopes that this event would provide another avenue for Malaysians residing in Finland to engage with each other and continue to be united. All in all, everyone enjoyed the mingling and feasting session, and most significantly, Malaysians of all races personified their patriotism and unity during this occasion.
