Finland celebrated the Sámi National Day this week. The day raises awareness of the history, culture and rights of the Sámi people - an indigenous people with their own distinct languages, cultures and lifestyles who traditionally live in the Arctic areas of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Russia.
In the Malaysian 'Orang Asal' is an overarching term, encompassing all indigenous people on both Peninsular and East Malaysia; with settlements scattered often in mountainous areas or the jungles of the rainforest. Their special status is enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution and protected by law. Like other indigenous peoples, they strive to preserve their own distinctive culture and identity, which is linked by physical, economic, social, cultural, territorial, and spiritual ties to their immediate natural environment.
