Essendon, 31 August, 2023 — The High Commission of Malaysia proudly hosted the Merdeka Golf Tournament 2023 at the scenic Essendon Country Club, bringing together over 70 attendees from across the United Kingdom in a celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie. H.E. Dato Zakri Jaafar, High Commissioner of Malaysia welcomed the golfers and distinguished guests, including H.E. Hoang Long Nguyen, Ambassador of Vietnam, H.E. Thani Thongpahakdi, Ambassador of Thailand, and H.E. Douangmany Gnotsyoudom, Ambassador of the Lao PDR.
The Club’s lush fairways provided a scenic backdrop for the tournament, showcasing the remarkable golfing prowess and outstanding sportsmanship of the participants. In his address, H.E. Dato’ Zakri Jaafar praised the tournament as an exemplary way to promote friendship and camaraderie through the medium of sports, strengthening the bond within the Malaysian community in the UK and guests. The event also serves as one of the platforms for the High Commission to foster stronger ties and a sense of patriotism among Malaysians in the UK, all while celebrating Malaysia's 66th anniversary of Independence.
Among the golfers, Mr. Ahyauddin Muhamad emerged as the overall champion, capturing the title with exceptional golfing skills. There were also winners for Medal A, B and C categories. Together with trophies, the winners won exciting prizes, including unique experiences with Maserati. Lucky draw prizes saw participants walk away with return tickets to Malaysia by Malaysia Airlines, a Brompton bike, and stays at prestigious hotels in London including Intercontinental Hotel and Royal Lancaster Hotel.
