Malaysia voted in favour of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the Endorsement of the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, adopted in New York earlier tonight, with 142 votes in favour, 10 against and 12 abstentions. This collective commitment towards a two-State solution and recognition of the State of Palestine was a decisive factor in Malaysia’s support, as it represents a key step towards ending Israel’s colonisation and atrocities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Malaysia made clear after the vote that the realisation of a two-State solution and recognition of the State of Palestine must not be subject to preconditions. Palestine must be established based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, with full sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of return for millions of Palestinian refugees, all guaranteed under international law. Malaysia stressed that the New York Declaration must now be followed by concrete, time-bound measures to uphold these rights, ensure security guarantees for Palestine, and hold Israel accountable for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
