Budapest, 7 June 2025 — The Malaysian Embassy in Budapest turned heads and celebrated cultural heritage in a dazzling fashion as it hosted a unique “Tram Sarong” event aboard the city’s iconic Tram Line 2 on Saturday. The initiative aimed to showcase and promote the traditional kebaya, a vibrant symbol of Malaysian identity and regional Southeast Asian heritage.
The event transformed Tram Line 2 into a moving cultural exhibition, gliding past some of Budapest’s most breathtaking landmarks along the banks of the Danube River. Tram Line 2 in Budapest, often hailed as one of the most scenic tram routes in Europe, was a fitting choice for the occasion. It runs parallel to the Danube on the Pest side, offering stunning views of the Buda Castle, Parliament Building, Chain Bridge, and Gellért Hill. With the glittering river on one side and a panorama of architectural marvels on the other, the tram provided the perfect backdrop for this celebration of Malaysian tradition.
“We wanted to bring a piece of Malaysia to Hungary in a way that merges culture, and beauty” said CDA a.i. Ms. Vanitha Gopalakrishnan. “The kebaya is more than just an attire. It is a symbol of elegance, tradition, and shared regional heritage across Southeast Asia. We’re proud to showcase it here in Budapest.”
The Tram Sarong concept originates from informal social rides in Malaysia known as Keretapi Sarong encouraging the wearing of traditional attire in public. The same idea was reimagined in Budapest with Tram. This event also aligns with the recognition of kebaya by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 4 December 2024.
As the tram pulled into its final stop at the Iconic landmark in Budapest, the Hungarian Parliament, the celebration ended with a group photo and participants were served traditional Malaysian cuisine. It was a vibrant, unforgettable journey—one that crossed not only city streets, but cultural borders.
