50th NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION IN
The High Commission of Malaysia, New Delhi hosted the 50th National Day Reception on Friday, 31 August 2007 at the Taj Palace Hotel. The event was attended by about 400 guests comprising of members of the diplomatic corps, officials from Indian ministries and agencies, academicians, media personalities, business people and selected Malaysians living in New Delhi. The Chief Guest was Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Anand Sharma. The occasion was also graced by YAM Raja Muda Johor. External Affairs Minister, Pranab Mukherjee send a flower bouquet for the occasion.
The evening started with the playing of the Indian National Anthem and Negaraku followed by a cake-cutting ceremony by Acting High Commissioner, Mrs. Norlin Othman and Mr. Anand Sharma. Video clips on ‘Visit Malaysia Year’ campaign, and ’Semangat Merdeka’ was displayed on a wide screen TV throughout the evening. The highlight of the evening was a performance by Warisan Johor Ghazal Troupe who enthralled the crowd not only with traditional Malay tunes but also western songs like the international hit ‘Macarena’ and several Hindi and Tamil songs. The guests were treated to Malaysian food prepared by two chefs brought in from Istana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. ‘Bunga telur’ was given out as parting gift to all guests.
