INESPO 2011

 

Congratulations to Malaysian students from MRSM Jasin, Melaka and Sekolah Menengah Sains Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang for winning the second place at the 3^rd International Environment & Scientific Project Olympiad (INESPO 2011) competition held at Utrecht University in the Netherlands on 30 June 2011.  They consisted of Wan Shazrul Wan Ahmad Sufian, Muhammad Harith Zulkafli, Heeswar a/l Mohan, and Mohammad Faiz bin Mohd. Zaki.

 

The INESPO was aimed at promoting cooperation and exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as encouraging young talents in various areas of science relating to the environment. As many as 200 students from 41 countries participated in the competition and came up with various projects and research to showcase solutions for various environmental problems.

 

The opening ceremony of INESPO 2011 was held at Utrecht University on 27 June 2011 by the Deputy Mayor of Utrecht City. On 27 and 28 June 2011, the students presented their projects to a panel of jury headed by Mr. Rob van Hattum from the Science Center NEMO in the Netherlands.

 

Wan Shazrul and Muhammad Harith teamed up to produce a project called “Discovery of New Material Characterization as a New Coal Energy”. The project examined the potential of recycling waste plastic bag and Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) fibre to reduce greenhouse gas emission and produce a green solid biofuel to replace lignite coal in thermal energy generation. The aim was to create an abundant source of energy that is renewable and environmentally friendly. 

 

Meanwhile, Heeswar and Mohammad Faiz produced a research called “Once Thrown, Now a Throne”. This project was aimed at producing a biodegradable and recyclable oil absorbent material made from Empty Fruit Bunch to clear up oil spill in the open sea.  

 

The award-giving ceremony was conducted on 30 June 2011 at the Utrecht University. H.E. Dato’ Dr Fauziah Mohamad Taib, the Ambassador of Malaysia to the Netherlands, attended the award ceremony.
