On 17 March 2009, the Mayor of Nieuw-Lekkerland officially launched the new tourist season 2009 at Kinderdijk World Heritage site, where 19 windmills are located. The windmills were built as early as the 14th century to protect the area from floods and they symbolise the historical Dutch battle with water.

Representatives from various embassies attended the event, where flags from their respective countries were hoisted on the windmill.
