H.E. Dr Fauziah Mohd. Taib and Embassy staff went on a study trip to the Keringhuis, Public Water Management Information Centre recently to learn more about the technologies used for flood risk management in the Netherlands.
The trip also included a site visit to the impressive Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier - the world’s largest moveable barrier. It consists of two massive steel doors; the length of each door is nearly equal to the height of the Eiffel Tower. Under normal circumstance, these steel doors are fully opened so ships may have access to the Port of Rotterdam. When there is threat from rising waters, the barrier doors come together to form a wall and closes off the passage to prevent water from passing through.
It was an engaging and informative trip and heightened appreciation of the immense effort required to keep Netherlands safe from flood waters.
