ADVISE ON TREMORS AND EARTHQUAKES
FOR MALAYSIAN RESIDENTS IN AND TRAVELLERS TO AFFECTED REGIONS
For regions which do experience earthquakes and tremors, concerned Malaysian residents and travelers are advised to take the following measures in the event of tremors and earthquakes:
If you are indoors when strong shaking or tremors is felt:
(a) Get underneath a table. If you are not near a strong table or desk to get under, drop to the floor against an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms. Never stand underneath a doorway.
(b) Avoid standing near or being under windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances and cabinets filled with heavy objects.
(c) Do not try to run out of buildings structure during strong tremors or shaking.
(d) It is safer to remain inside a building after an earthquake unless there is a fire or gas leak.
(e) If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
(f) Do not use elevators.
If you are outdoors when strong shaking or tremors is felts:
(a) Move to a clear area if you can safely walk. Avoid power lines, buildings and trees.
(b) If you’re driving, pull to the side of the road and stop. Avoid stopping under overhead hazards such as bridges and buildings as there may be debris from them.
Once the strong shaking or tremors stops:
(a) Check for your own as well as and the people around for injuries; provide first aid if possible. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger.
(b) Check around for dangerous conditions, such as fires, downed power lines and structure damage.
(c) Inspect your home for damage.
(c) If you have fire extinguishers and are trained to use them, put out small fires in your home immediately if there is. If not, use buckets or water or wet towels to extinguish them if possible to contain their spread.
(d) Turn of the gas only if you smell gas.
(e) Check your phones to be sure they have not shaken off the hook and are tying up a line.
If you are trapped in debris:
(a) Move as little as possible so that you don’t kick up dust. Cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Likewise when attempting to assist any person trapped in debris.
(b) Tap on a pipe or wall so that rescuers can hear where you are. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort.
Natural Disaster Kit Bag
For Malaysian residents in New Zealand, the following articles are useful to have on hand in cases of disasters such as flooding and earthquakes etc:
(a) One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
(b) A three-day supply of non-perishable food.
(c) Battery-powered radio and extra batteries.
(d) Flashlight and extra batteries.
(e) First aid kit.
(f) Whistle to signal for help.
(g) Dust mask to help filter contaminated air; plastic sheeting and duct tape.
(h) Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
(i) Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
(j) Can opener or Swiss knife.
(k) Local maps.
These items are to be in a bag and tied to a furniture such as tables or legs of beds to ensure stability of item and ease of location.
