ASEAN HIGH COMMISSIONERS ON A HUNTING TRIP TO CHAKWAL

ON JANUARY 10-11, 2009

Two of the ASEAN High Commissioners, HIS EXCELLENCY PEHIN COLONEL ( R ) ABDUL JALIL AHMAD of  Brunei Darussalam and HIS EXCELLENCY AMBASSADOR AHMAD SHAHIZAN ABD SAMAD of Malaysia went on a hunting trip to Chakwal in the province of Punjab on January 10, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. Others present for the hunting trip were AWANGKU SOFIAN PG. HAJI ZAIDI, Third Secretary of the High Commission of Bunei Darussalam and ENCIK PAKIESAMY SAVARY, Club General Manager of the Butterfly Golf Resort, who is a fellow Malaysian. Unfortunately, the other ASEAN Ambassadors of Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam had to decline their participation due to a dinner invitation by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on the same day.

From 4:00 p.m. until 7:15 p.m., the hunting spree kicked-off with the shooting of birds, but the toll ended with only one white-partridge.  After a sumptuous barbecue dinner and traditional Pashtoon dance, at 9:20 p.m., the rabbit hunting mode was very different in that it was on jeep-tracking and a bright-spotlight was used to spot the rabbits, which is scientifically known as Sylvilagus floridanus.

The experience was rugged and difficult; but rewarding, with a harvest of seven rabbits up until 2:00 a.m. before calling it a day !

In concluding, the hunting trip to Chakwal by the ASEAN High Commissioners in Pakistan was a new experience as Pakistan has undoubtedly a systematic and scheduled hunting season in tandem with a balanced and sustainable conservation of wildlife in the country.
