Members of the PNG Diplomatic Corps visited the plant site of Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas (PNG LNG) in Port Moresby on 29 May 2012.
PNG LNG is an integrated development that comprises gas production and processing facilities in the Southern Highlands and Western Provinces of PNG, including liquefaction and storage facilities with capacity of 6.6 million tons per year and connected by over 700 km of pipelines. It is expected to produce over nine trillion cubic feet of gas and will progress in stages. The first LNG deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2014. The investment which is estimated at USD 16 billion has created job opportunities to 16,200 workers from PNG and 45 other countries including Malaysia.
The half- day visit was initiated and organised by PYT Datin Seri Blanche Olbery, High Commissioner of Malaysia/ Dean of PNG Diplomatic Corps. The purpose of the visit was two-fold. Firstly, to witness the capacity of the project and secondly, to analyse the impact it brings to the economic and social structure of PNG. The High Commissioner was joined by the Ambassadors of the United States of America, Indonesia, France and the Republic of Korea; the High Commissioners of India and Fiji; the deputies of Japan, Solomon Islands and China as well as the Resident Coordinator of UNDP.
