Farid Amin wins inaugural Merdeka golf tourney

Winners and runners-up of the Malaysian Golfers in QatarÂ?s Merdeka Open Tournament which took place at the Doha Golf Club

Farid Amin won the Merdeka Open Golf Tournament at the Doha Golf Club on Wednesday.

Seventy-two men and women took part in the inaugural Malaysian Golfers tournament which was held under the patronage of MalaysiaÂ?s Ambassador to Qatar Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari marked the 49th "Independence" (Merdeka) day of Malaysia recently.

"This is our first Â?OpenÂ? tournament. Our previous tournaments were limited to MGQ members and much smaller in scale," said club president Yaakob A Rahman.

Among the VIP guests who competed were the ambassadors of Japan, Thailand and the charge dÂ?affairs of Brunei as well as top diplomatic and corporate players in Qatar. Ambassadors and diplomats from South Africa, Afghanistan, Turkey and Nepal were among the crowd of supporters who joined in the celebratory lunch and prize-giving ceremony.

Ambassador Ku Jaafar thanked sponsors Sime Darby Engineering, Gamuda/WCT, UEM, TFCN The Look Company, Mercury Qatar, Pocari Sweat, Z-Hanani, Gulf Crafts, UZMA Engineering and Qatar Shell for their contributions and presented trophies to the winners.

Overall Open champion: Farid Amin; MGQ champion (UEM Challenge Trophy): Annuar Abdullah; Guest champion: Lai Fong Chan.
