DOHA Â? Trade between Qatar and Malaysia is on an upswing with economic ties bringing the countries even closer together.
In an interview to Al Sharq, Malaysian Ambassador Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari said the value of QatarÂ?s exports to Malaysia stood at QR67m in 2004 and at QR245m this year. Malaysian exports to Qatar was QR191m in 2004 and now stands at QR304m, he said.
The two countries decided to set up embassies in the respective countries way back in 1975. Â?We have made great progress in our relations since. Malaysia chairs the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) and Qatar immediately preceded us. Consequently, we have had an opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions on a regular basis.Â?
Â?We are trying to encourage investment in each otherÂ?s countries. Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB) has received a licence to operate in Kuala Lumpur. Consulting offices have been set up to give advice on the proper fields in which to invest,Â? the envoy said.
He said Qatari firms have confidence in investing in Malaysia and his country was providing a large number of personnel involved in major projects here.
Speaking on the OIC, he said: Â?It is working hard but has some limits. The OIC played an important role in Lebanon and Qatar also was important in bringing about the ceasefire there.Â?
The ambassador went on to thank Qatar for providing many opportunities to different countries to meet here and exchange views and opinions.
