ASEAN YOUTH AL-QURAN RECITAL COMPETITION 2009

The Consulate General of Malaysia last Wednesday (8 April 2009), organized an ASEAN Youth Al-Quran Recital Competition at its premises in Al-Rihab. The event was attended by Consuls General of ASEAN countries and members of the ASEAN community in Jeddah.

In his welcoming remarks the Malaysian Consul General Hidayat Abdul Hamid expressed his fervent hope that the Al-Quran recital programme would inspire the young generation not to neglect the Quran, to learn it and practise its teachings.  Part of the aim of the programme was to raise the level of proficiency of reading and understanding of the Al Quran.

The programme was also to further strengthen the friendship and camaraderie among the ASEAN community in Jeddah. Six qaris representing six ASEAN consulates ; Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand participated in the event. The judges were from Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia.

While the judges tally the scores, guests were treated to Malaysian delicacies and Nasyid performance by Malaysian students from Madinah University.

The qari from the Philippines, Abdul Nasser Asgar was announced as the Champion. The qari from Indonesia, Hilal Atiq Nurbani came second while the qari from Malaysia, Muhammad Kamaludin Abdul Kadir was third. Prizes were given away by the Consul General of Malaysia.
