Hari Raya Open House, 16 May 2021
Ramadhan this year seems to have gone by very fast. Before we knew it, we were already at its end and observing the Eid. We had an extra long weekend which started on Thursday this year, and with the weather here in Senegal still feeling cool even at midday, the Malaysians marked Eid with a small but meaningful lunch at Rumah Malaysia, the official Residence, on Sunday, 16 May 2021.
Even though the Saturday was designated for prepping purposes, the ladies still found time to make Mee Kari, a popular Malaysian dish of noodles and spicy soup. Then it was all hands on deck as the kitchen became a beehive of activity and the men set about doing the set-up for the next day's event.
All the Malaysians in Dakar were able to join us for the lunch on Sunday. The menu? All the Malaysian goodies of Eid, of course, including the traditional lemang (glutinous rice in bamboo), rendang ayam (chicken cooked with spices), lontong (yellow vegetable curry), daging itam (beef simmered in soya sauce) and the traditional Malay cookies. Also on the menu this year was Mee Mamak, a fried noodle dish popular in the state of Penang.
With the sun shining brightly overhead, a gentle breeze keeping everyone cool, the Malaysians properly fed, the kids gamboling on the lawn, and Eid songs blaring in the background, life could not be better on this piece of Malaysian soil in Senegal....
