A Charity Screening of ‘Road to Dawn’ organised by the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Taiwan and the Sun Yat-Sen Penang Base was held from 1400 – 1600 hrs on 25 July 2010 at the auditorium of the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Taiwan.
Vice President, Mr. Vincent Siew delivered a speech before the Charity Screening which was attended by more than 2,400 people. He lauded the effort of organisers in revitalising the interest and commemoration of Dr. Sun Yat-sen whose relentless effort inspired the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of China.
‘Road to Dawn’ is based on the recollection of Dr. Sun Yat-sen who sought shelter and financial support in Penang, Malaysia circa 1910-1911. It was the first China produced movie filmed entirely in Penang showing the splendour of Penang’s beautiful and historical scenery as well as Malaysia’s multicultural society.
In a preceding event, Mr. Lim You Rang, Acting President of Representative of MFTC joined the organisers at a press conference on 23 July 2010 to introduce Malaysia and the movie to international media. To impress upon the media on the Peranakan culture, kuih-muih such as odeh-odeh, kuih lapis and curry puff were prepared and served at the press conference.
The Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre, Taipei (MFTC) contributed to the cultural exhibition held in conjunction with the Charity Screening. Led by Mr. Muhammad Nasir Pahmi, Director (Tourism) and Mr. Muhd Shahrumiza Zakaria Director (Trade), the MFTC team presented a colourful window exhibition and promotion booths visited by more than 3,300 tourist everyday from 23 to 25 July 2010.
Four Taiwanese tour agents introduced movie-linked tour package in conjunction with this Charity Screening. Besides promoting Penang as a popular tourist destination, the tour agents also encouraged locals to experience the Peranakan culture and to witness historical building of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site featured in the movie.
