KL Mufti shares Malaysian experience with Ukrainian MuslimS
The Mufti of Kuala Lumpur, Dato Haji Wan Zahidi Wan Teh, visited Kiev City from 23 to 29 April 2013 at the invitation of the Mufti of Kiev Ar Rahmah mosque, Sheikh Ahmed Tamim. During his visit to the mosque, the Malaysian Mufti was given the privilege to lead the Friday’s sermon, talk to ‘qariah’ and exchange views with a number of religious organisations.
A special talk was organized by the mosque administration for the visiting Mufti to share his views on the ‘Malaysian Experiences in the Multicultural Society” on 25 April 2013 at the premises of the mosque. About 70 persons from the Muslim and diplomatic community attended. His talk covered a wide range of topics related to Islamic practices in Malaysia from the historical perspectives, important role of Islam in the nationhood of Malaysia, the leading role of the Malaysian State Rulers and the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, as the Head of the Islam Religion, the various functions and structures of Islamic administration, Islamic education and teachings as well as a way of life in Malaysia.
H.E. Ambassador Chuah Teong Ban, Ambassador of Malaysia in Ukraine was also invited to speak during the session. In his brief remarks, he supplemented the visiting Mufti’s talk, by introducing the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) as initiated by YAB Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia which was based on the guiding principle of the Islamic concept of ‘wassatiyah’. Ambassador Chuah also highlighted the pioneering efforts of Malaysia in developing various Syariah compliance financial instruments and service products, such as ‘sukuk’ and ‘takaful’ insurance. On laws in Malaysia, Ambassador Chuah shared with the audience that Malaysia practices two legal systems, one law based on common law for both criminal and civil matters and the other, the Islamic Syariah Law (Civil law) applicable to Muslims only. These two legal systems coexisted.
