Welcome to the August edition of the Australia Malaysia Business Council (AMBC) Victoria’s Update newsletter.
The past 12 months has been a milestone year for our Business Council with a number of well supported initiatives and programs together with networking, business and social functions that culminated with the very successful Opportunities in Malaysia for Australian Businesses information event on July 23rd.
On behalf of the Executive Committee I wish to thank the Victorian Department of Business and Innovation for their sponsorship of the Opportunities in Malaysia for Australian Businesses event.
The comprehensive speakers program provided attendees with information on how they could benefit from the exceptional opportunities provided by MAFTA and the potential for businesses to expand their activities and exports into the Malaysian and SE Asian marketplaces using Malaysia as their base.
I also wish to extend the sincere appreciation of the Business Council to HE Dato’ Salman bin Ahmad, Malaysian High Commissioner to Australia, Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, Malaysian Consul General to Victoria for their support of the business information and trade promotion event – and for their very informative presentations.
However, AMBC Victoria is far from resting on its laurels and has a number of exciting events and programs planned for the remainder of 2012 and I would encourage you to make a diary note of these two upcoming very important functions
Wednesday August 29 – AMBC Victoria AGM and Networking Function
The Networking Function will be held at the offices of Madgwicks Lawyers and the Guest Speaker will be Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, Malaysian Consul General to Victoria.
Dr Rameez arrived in Melbourne just over 12 months ago and has worked tirelessly to represent the Malaysian Government in Victoria and a significant achievement was the opening of the Consulate in St Kilda Road earlier this year. Dr Rameez will provide an insight into the activities, challenges, successes and future aspirations of the Malaysian Consulate General in Victoria.
Thursday September 6 – Merdeka Day Celebration and Cocktail Function
The prestigious Marriott Hotel will be the venue for this year’s Merdeka Day Celebration.
Join your friends for an evening of fine food, entertainment and camaraderie as we commemorate and celebrate Malaysia’s independence.
AMBC Victoria – AGM
The Annual General Meeting of AMBC Victoria will be on Wednesday August 29 at the offices of Madgwicks Lawyers and will precede the Networking Function.
The AGM marks the conclusion of my fourth term as AMBC Victoria President and I wish to announce that I will not be seeking a further term as President of the Business Council. Unfortunately, I have been suffering from some health issues and need to slow down a bit.
However, I would like to continue my association with the Council as a member of the Executive Committee and ask for your support in endorsing my nomination at the AGM.
AMBC Victoria Vice President Joe Perri will be seeking endorsement from members to become the new President of the Business Council.
Current Committee members Trevor Haines, Juris Austrums, James Liew and Lee Aik Sern have also confirmed that they will also be re-nominating for the Executive Committee.
I certainly put my support behind the nominations of Joe, Trevor, Juris, James and Lee Aik Sern.
Honorary members of the Executive Committee are Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, Malaysian Consul General to Victoria and Darrin Vouch, Department of Business and Innovation.
The AGM offers an opportunity for AMBC Victoria’s financial members to personally contribute to promoting and enhancing the activities of the Business Council and its status.
AMBC Victoria’s Executive Committee requires eight (8) dedicated professionals to lead and drive the Business Council’s strategic activities.
The commitment is not overwhelming but it does require working as part of a team that is dedicated to increasing membership; sponsorship and membership revenue; marketing, promotion and communication; organising events and activities; etc.

I urge you to consider submitting a nomination for the Executive Committee and to attend the AGM, the networking function and to continue being an active member of AMBC Victoria.
