At the invitation of Mr. Dali Latiff, the Team Leader of the Product Team Design, Petronas, Dato' Mohd. Arshad M. Hussain, Ambassador of Malaysia to Austria and Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations, Vienna visited BRP-Powertrain, Petronas’ joint development partner in Austria on 22 July 2009.

The joint development project between PETRONAS and BRP-Powertrain focuses on industrialising a 3-inline 4-stroke engine of snow mobiles for recreational applications. BRP-Powertrain, which is based in Linz, Austria began the development of the engines since November 2005. The 130 horse-power engine known as Rotax 4-TEC 1200 is said to have brought Formula 1 racing and automobile technologies to the snowmobile world. The joint project’s first variant product went into production in September 2008.

The visit took place at the Regional Innovation Centre in Linz, where Dato’ Mohd. Arshad was briefed on the development project, as well as future collaboration between both companies. A tour around the Innovation Centre was also organized where various models of the snowmobiles with Rotax 4-TEC 1200 engines produced were on show.

While he was in Linz, Dato’ Mohd. Arshad also took the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on Dr. Ingrid Holzhammer, Deputy Mayor of Linz after the visit to BRP-Powertrain. Dato’ Mohd. Arshad’s visit was warmly received at the New City Hall, Linz by Dr. Holzhammer. The meeting ensued with a fruitful discussion on the Embassy’s activities in Austria as well as on Linz being the cultural capital of Austria for the year 2009. Dato’ Mohd. Arshad was accompanied by Mr. Ismail Salam, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Malaysia in Austria during the visit.
