12TH ASIA-EUROPE MEETING (ASEM) SUMMIT
YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr. Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia led the Malaysian delegation to the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit which was held in Brussels, Belgium on 18 and 19 October 2018. The theme for the 12th ASEM Summit was “Global Partners for Global Challenges”. YAB Deputy Prime Minister was accompanied by YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister’s Office and the Embassy of Malaysia in Belgium.
The Summit was attended by Heads of State and Government as well as representatives from all 53 ASEM Member Partners which include: one (1) Sultan, eight (8) Presidents, two (2) Vice Presidents, 31 Prime Ministers, one (1) Deputy Prime Minister, one (1) Special Envoy, seven (7) Foreign Ministers and Ministers, and the Secretary-General of ASEAN.
At the margins of the 12th ASEM Summit, YAB Deputy Prime Minister held five (5) bilateral meetings, namely with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior and Security of Belgium, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Prime Minister of Ireland, Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Prime Minister of Norway.
As for YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs also took the opportunity to conduct two (2) bilateral meetings and two (2) programmes at the sidelines of the 12th ASEM Summit, i.e. Bilateral Meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of Belgium, Bilateral Meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Meeting with the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (DASE) of the European Parliament and Forum Session organised by the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS).
YAB Deputy Prime Minister also attended a dinner event with 80 Malaysian diaspora in Belgium on 19 October 2018. In her remarks, YAB Deputy Prime Minister touched on the Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the 14th General Election, the aspiration of New Malaysia, and the country’s restructuring proses. She also welcomed the Malaysian diaspora in Belgium to support and contribute towards the effort to develop Malaysia.
