22ND ASEAN-EU MINISTERIAL MEETING (AEMM)

YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the Malaysian delegation to the 22nd ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) in Brussels, Belgium on 21 January 2019.

During the meeting, Malaysia stressed among others, the central importance of palm oil to its economy and people, and regretted that the industry had come under renewed attack from legislators, non-governmental organisations and media outlets in the EU. YB Foreign Minister reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of its national palm oil industry, inter alia through the application of relevant standards, as well over 60 laws and regulations in place covering the protection of wildlife, the environment and the health and safety of workers.

At the sidelines of the 22nd AEMM, YB Foreign Minister held five (5) bilateral meetings with his counterparts namely, from Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania and Spain.

Besides having a bilateral meeting with Mdm. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for the third time since becoming Foreign Minister last year, YB Foreign Minister also had meetings with two other EU MPs and had the opportunity to address an assembly of EU MPs at the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) of the European Parliament.

Despite the tight schedule, YB Foreign Minister managed to drop by at the Chancery on his way to the airport to get to know Embassy’s staff.
