MALAYSIA’S HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TO TURKIYE AND SYRIA
Malaysia joins the global chorus to express its solidarity and unwavering support to the people of Turkiye and Syria who were severely affected by the devastating earthquake on 6 February 2023.
Malaysia welcomes the European Union’s initiative to organise the International Donors’ Conference, “Together for the people in Turkiye and Syria” on 20 March 2023.
In response to the earthquake disaster in Turkiye and Syria, Malaysia has taken swift and timely actions to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected people.
The Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia went to Turkiye on 15 February 2023 to express Malaysia’s sympathy, solidarity and support to the Government and the people of Turkiye.
Malaysia’s humanitarian assistance to Turkiye include the deployment of Search and Rescue Team; setting up a field hospital; delivery of life-saving items worth USD750,000; as well as, the disbursement of EUR5 million donation by Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB) to three agencies in Turkiye namely, the Presidency of Turkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), Turk Kizilay and AHBAP (a non-governmental organisation).
Malaysia’s humanitarian assistance to Syria include the activation of Special Operation, “Ops Syria”, and the deployment of an advance team to conduct an assessment on the ground. Malaysia also delivered 42 tonnes of humanitarian aid through joint collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia launched a humanitarian donation campaign through the Disaster Fund of the Foreign Ministry to help victims of the earthquake disaster in Turkiye and Syria.
As of 18 March 2023, the total contribution to the Disaster Fund of the Foreign Ministry of Malaysia amounted to EUR6.1 million. The disaster fund will be directed to the victims of natural disaster accordingly through various channels identified by the Foreign Ministry of Malaysia.
Malaysia believes that timely, predictable and coordinated response to humanitarian needs is essential in saving lives and alleviating the suffering of affected victims.
Malaysia remains committed to providing the necessary humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake including post-disaster recovery.
