Despite parliament being in session on that day, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Milliken as well as five (5) members of parliament attended the reception. Some 41 ambassadors and heads of mission and two former deputy prime ministers, one whom is currently the Chancellor of Carleton University were among the attendees. The Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces had sent his representative from the National Defence Headquarters at the level of Brigadier-General. Senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) were also present. Two Mayors and a Deputy Mayor from the Glengarry-Prescott Russell constituency in Ontario province also attended the reception. The Malaysian Honorary Consul, Mitchell Wigdor, who is based in Toronto, was present at the reception.
