At the invitation of Brune Poirson, Minister of State, attached to the Ministre d'État, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, the Embassy of Malaysia participated in the “Make Our Ocean Great Again” high level event at Grand Amphithéâtre du Muséum, 57 Rue Cuvier, 75005 Paris on 4 July 2018. The purpose of the event was to draw attention to the challenges faced and the solutions that need to be implemented to protect our oceans and coral reefs. Poirson had also hoped this event would enhance the national and international commitments to save coral reefs which includes measures such as the strengthening of International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI).

The event was split into two sessions. “Coral reef international commitments” was the theme for the first session while the second session focused on the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) Secretariat handover ceremony to Monaco, Australia, and Indonesia. Most of the speakers touched on the importance of coral reefs, grave danger facing coral reefs, actions that need to be taken to prevent coral reefs from disappearing, and Our Ocean conference in Bali, 29-31 October 2018.

During the ICRI Secretariat handover ceremony, all three co-chairs appeared ready to partner and work together on common agendas. Individually all three co-chairs also highlighted their respective priorities as co-chairs. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco; Susi Pudjiastuti, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia; and Patrick Suckling, Ambassador of Australia for the Environment represented their respective countries.
