On 4 May 2018, the ASEAN Heads of Mission in Paris including Mr. Mohamad Razdan Jamil, chargé d'affaires, who was accompanied by Mr. Ong Tze Shen, First Secretary, met with French Senate President Gérard.
During the meeting with Larche, exchanges of views were had on cultural diplomacy, economic performance of ASEAN and the EU, ASEAN common market, political push for economic engagements between ASEAN and France, migration, foreign fighters, terrorism, food security, defence, domestic French politics, EU politics, and international politics.
The President of the Senate has a key role in the institution as he organizes and chairs the debates; ensures the smooth running of the Senate; and is the representative of the Senate. The President of the Senate is also the guarantor of the continuity of the Republic as he can provisionally carry out the duties of President of the Republic if the latter is impeached, resigns or dies. As the Guarantor of the Constitution, he appoints 3 of the 9 members of the Constitutional Council. He can refer draft laws to the Council if he considers that they do not comply with the Constitution. The President of the Republic must consult him in certain circumstances, such as the dissolution of the National Assembly.
