| The Republic of Guinea has celebrated its 50th Independence Day on Thursday, 2nd October 2008. The celebration was held at Martyrs Square, Conakry after the country celebrated its Eid Mubarak on 1st October 2008. It was on 2nd October 1958 when history was made as the French flag was lowered and the Guinean flag hoisted, after the massive vote of no to the Franco-African proposed by General De Gaulle, with the first President Ahmed Sekou Toure leading the Republic of Guinea. General Lansana Conte was proclaimed as the President of the second Republic in April 1984 when Toure died suddenly during a surgical procedure on March 24, 1984 in Cleveland, USA. |
