As part of its ongoing engagement series with key stakeholders in the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Seoul Foreign Correspondents’ Club (SFCC) hosted another coffee briefing session on 8 May 2026 featuring Mr Jang Donghyeok, Chairman of the People Power Party (PPP), the main opposition party in the National Assembly. The event attracted close to 80 participants, comprising predominantly local and foreign journalists based in Seoul, reflecting the considerable domestic and international interest in the forthcoming local elections and their potential implications for the future trajectory of ROK’s politics. The Embassy of Malaysia was represented by its Deputy Chief of Mission at the said briefing.
The session was held against the backdrop of an increasingly charged political atmosphere as political parties intensified their campaigns ahead of the nationwide local elections scheduled for 3 June 2026. During the briefing, Mr Jang shared the PPP’s assessment of the current political landscape, outlining the party’s electoral strategy, key campaign messages and expectations for the upcoming polls. He also offered his views on a range of domestic issues, including the state of the economy, governance, public welfare and the role of the opposition in providing checks and balances within the country's democratic system.
The interactive session provided participants with a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the opposition party’s priorities and its assessment of the political environment as election day approaches. Discussions also touched on broader issues shaping voter sentiment, including economic challenges, regional development, public confidence in government institutions and the evolving dynamics of inter-party competition.
