Hon. Dato’ Seri S. Samy Vellu, Special Envoy (Ministerial rank) for Infrastructure to India and South Asia was on a four-day working visit to the Republic of Korea from 3 – 6 July 2012 to hold discussions on the proposed Padma Multipurpose Bridge project in Bangladesh. This follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed recently between Malaysia and Bangladesh. Malaysian company Axisjaya Group of Companies is expected to team up with Korea’s Samsung C & T to implement the USD 3 billion project. The bridge project is proposed to boost the overall development of Bangladesh by linking the regions separated by the Padma River as well as help improve the commercialization of Dhaka and Janjira in Bangladesh. During the visit, the Special Envoy met with the Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Mr Kwon Do-youp to whom he presented a letter seeking the Korean Government’s consideration to provide a soft loan to finance the project. The Special Envoy also had a session with the Vice-chairman and CEO of Samsung C & T Corporation Mr Jung Yeon-joo to discuss the collaboration between Axisjaya and Samsung C & T for the bridge project.
