His Excellency Mohd Aini Atan, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Lao PDR paid a Courtesy Call on H.E. Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR on 25 May 2017 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR
H.E. Minister and the Malaysian Ambassador noted the close ties between Malaysia and the Lao PDR. Malaysia and the Lao PDR had successfully celebrated their 50th Anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in July 1966. It is envisaged that the bilateral relations between the two countries would be further enhanced in the future.
H.E. Mohd Aini also touched on the success of the first Official Visit to Malaysia by H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister of Lao PDR to Malaysia on 9-10 May 2017, since being appointed as the Prime Minister on 20 April 2016.
Both sides noted on the highlight of the Official Visit, namely the Malaysia–Lao PDR Business Forum held 9 May 2017 at the MATRADE Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur with attendance of more than 400 participants. Currently, Malaysia is the 4th largest foreign investor in the country through hydropower projects, development of special and specific economic zone, railway construction and services sector.
In 2016, Malaysia’s bilateral trade with Lao PDR reached USD31 million, an increase of 74.5 percent compared to USD17.7 million in 2015. Exports is valued at USD18.6 million and imports valued at USD12.4 million. To date, Malaysia’s investments in Lao PDR is valued at more than USD1 billion with more than 100 registered projects.
Another key highlight during the recent Official Visit was the signing of the MoU in the field of Science and Technology on 9 May 2017. Both sides also look forward on the signing of other MoUs, especially in the field of training for Diplomats.
