HOUSES HANDING OVER CEREMONY BY PETRONAS FOR CYCLONE NARGIS VICTIMS, MYAINGTHARYAR VILLAGE, 5 APRIL 2009
 
On 5 April 2009, PETRONAS handed over the Myaingthaya Village houses to the Chairman of Kungyangon Township Peace and Development Council which was fully funded by PETRONAS for the victims of Cyclone Nargis.The guest of honour of the event was H.E Brigadier General Lun Thi, Minister of Energy of the Union of Myanmar and H.E Dato’ Mazlan Muhammad, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Union of Myanmar. H.E Dato’ Mazlan Muhammad in his speech highlighted that the housing project is one example of assistance that the Malaysian government and Malaysians in general had extended to the government and the people of Myanmar. He also said that these new houses will provide to some of the people in the village a clean, orderly, comfortable and much more durable place of shelter than before.On 2 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis struck the coast of Myanmar. Over two days, the Cyclone moved across the Ayeyarwady Delta and southern Yangon Division resulting in a tragic loss of life and widespread of destruction. An estimated 140,000 people were killed, 800,000 displaced and 450,000 houses were destroyed. This is another project of humanitarian assistance by the people of Malaysia for the victims for Cyclone Nargis.
